What is Hypnosis?

What is Hypnosis?  This was the question posed by tutors early in my Hypnotherapy studies.  My answer back then was quite specific – I thought this was a ‘trance-like’ state that people entered, in which the hypnotherapist could manipulate or make suggestions that the person then believed had been their own ideas all along.  I felt ‘all-powerful’ as the hypnotist who ‘made this happen’ to them and because of the change I could make in their lives.

I was pretty much 100% wrong in everything I had been thinking at that time and it couldn’t have been further from the truth as I now understand it.

Hypnosis is not about me, it’s about YOU.   It’s not a ‘trance- like’ state that someone can put you into without your consent.  It’s actually something you do yourself and do many times a day – it’s concentration, it’s everything we learn, it’s skills we become good at through practice, it’s the daydreams we have of a happy and successful future.  It’s our ‘gut feeling’ about whether something is right or wrong, or when we subconciously analyse other peoples’ micro-movements and instinctively decide whether we like or dislike them, whether we trust or distrust them, whether we love or hate them.  It’s the beginnings of using our imagination to something like its full capacity.  It’s also, as the medical profession might term it, the ‘placebo’ effect.

As my hypnotherapy practice has developed, one of the first things I do now is teach clients how to hypnotise themselves.  In doing this, I empower people to retake control, or perhaps for the first time to be in control of what is happening and what they are aiming to achieve.  The results are A – ma -zing!

That shift in clients’ personal belief and self empowerment allows me to become a ‘travelling companion’ on their therapy journey, just assisting them to be the best person that they can be.  It’s always the client themselves who actually stop their negative habits, come out of depression, lose the anxiety they felt and reduce the problems in their lives. I really just tag along for the ride, perhaps offering a ‘road map’ based on experience of having gone down a similar road with other people who have had experienced similar issues.  As you make your journey of change, having someone alongside who recognises your already powerful internal resources for change and growth can be supportive. A skilled therapist can also assist in re-framing negative beliefs into positive ones and crystalise into words the changes that you’ve already decided on.

As an example of framing things positively: Imagine visiting your doctor because you’re feeling unwell,  knowing they are the health expert and what they say will be in your best interests. If you walked into the consulting room and the doctor were to say either:

A. That’s not a problem, just take these 3 times a day for 5 days and you’ll be fine. Or,
B. Hmmm, that’s a problem, just take these 3 times a day for 5 days and let’s see if they work.

Which statement is going to get help you get better most quickly?
Of course, the answer is A –  and that is also hypnosis, and a good example of how it is used routinely by ALL of us EVERY day!!
